Ponds & LakesThese regions range in size form just a few square meters to thousands of square kilometers, scattered throughout the earth. Many ponds are seasonal are only last a couple of months while lakes will exists for hundred years or more. Ponds and lakes might have limited species diversity since they are often isolated from one another and from other water sources like rivers and oceans. They are found in all types of environments and continents. Also lakes and ponds are divided into three different "zones" which are usually determined by depth and distance of shoreline.
The topmost zone near the shore of the lake or pond is the littoral zone. This zone is the warmest since it is shallow and can absorb more sunlight. The near-surface open water surrounded by the littoral zone is the limnetic zone and the deep-water part of the lake/pond is the profundal zone. This zone is much colder and denser than the other two. |
Where are they lOcated? The freshwater biomes covers roughly 20% of the Earth and 0.8% of the total water on this Earth. Lake Baikal, in Russia and located in Southern Siberia, is the biggest lake on Earth. There is also Lake Victoria in South Central Africa, as well as the Great Lakes of the midwest U.S. and Canada. Also Walden Pond in Concord, Masssachusetts that was formed by retreating glacier 10,000-12,00 years ago. Temperatures varies in ponds and lakes seasonally. During the summer, the tempeture can range from 4° C near the bottom to 22° C at the top. During the winter, the temperature at the bottom can be 4° C while the top is 0° C (ice). In between the two layers, there is a narrow zone called the thermocline where the temperature of the water changes rapidly.
